>>  DIAPORAMA

Villa Eugénie – Hôtel du Palais (GB)

Eugénie de Montijo knew Biarritz as a young girl. Playing in the rock pools and bathing in the waves at Port Vieux etched a lasting memory of those carefree days. It was as Empress of the French that she brought her beloved husband, Napoleon III, to Biarritz in 1854. The Emperor was won over and decided to offer his wife a villa where, commencing 1855, the couple could spend every summer season accompanied by their close friends and enjoy the seaside resort. “Le Palais”, a charming coloured structure built almost on the beach, came into being. Destroyed by a fire in 1903, it was reconstructed, modernized and extended to become a flagship of French luxury palace hotels.

"A bijou château”

That’s what the villa seemed like in August 1856, when Emperor Napoleon III and his wife, Eugenie, arrived. The Empress, who spent many holidays in Biarritz as a child, liked to visit every summer and enjoy the intimate setting, far-removed from imperial protocols. “Her palace”, nestling between the lighthouse and the “Lunatics’ Beach”, was designed with sea bathing, leisure activities and relaxation in mind. Bedrooms and reception rooms, facing west and the setting sun, offered the live show put on by the Atlantic Ocean. To the east, the sun rose over a few lodges, a lake and rock gardens.
The English-style gardens, stretching over twenty or so hectares, were covered with hydrangeas, rhododendrons and yuccas. Balsam-fragrant species lined the promenade used by residents taking a constitutional stroll. After the fall of the Second Empire, the death of Napoleon and then of her only son, Eugenie decided to sell. In 1880, Biarritz, victim of its success, was set to change; it needed more hotels and villas.
The gardens were broken up into building plots; the villa was extended and transformed. At one time a casino, in 1892 it became the Hôtel du Palais, a name for all eternity. Gutted by a fire in 1903, the Palace was rebuilt by Alfred Boulant. This modern restoration of the Villa Eugénie was particularly successful. Behind the high façade and opulent, refined décor, architect Niermans used an ingenious structure in reinforced concrete. The new palace opened in 1905. It became the hotel of choice for European monarchs, for example Edward VII, who regularly stayed there between 1901 and 1910. From the 1950s to present day, stars from the world of show business and sport, and members of international high society have taken up residence. Ranking as a “Palace” status hotel since 2011, the Palais is an international showcase for the luxury hotel industry and fine dining… à la française. SLIDE SHOW

Arroken arteko jolasek eta Portu Zaharreko uhinen arteko bainuek betirako markatu zituen bere haurtzaroko oroitzapenak. 1854an, enperadore zelarik, bere senar Napoleon III eraman zuen Biarritzera. Azken honek, loriaturik, etxe bat oparitu zion. 1855etik goiti, bikotea uda guztiz itzultzen zen bertara, lagunez inguraturik. «Le Palais» edo jauregia sortu zen, kasik hondartza gainean eraikitako etxe koloretsu eta ederra. 1881ean luxuzko hotel bilakatu zen. 1903an sute batek suntsitu ondotik, berreraiki zuten, modernoagoa eta handiagoa. Frantziako jauregien artean kuttunenetarikoa bilakatu da.

«Gaztelu ttipi bat, goxoki bat»

Itxura hori zuen etxeak 1856ko agorrilean, Napoleon III enperadorea eta Eugénie bere emaztea Biarritzera iritsi zirelarik. Eugéniek txikitatik zuen lotura bat Biarritzerekin eta atsegin zuen uda guztiz ingurune intimista batean murgiltzea, protokolo inperialetik urrun. Bere «jauregia», itsasargiaren eta «Eroen Kostaren» erdian, egokia zen itsasoko bainuetarako, aisialdirako eta pausatzeko. Ekialdeko logeletan eta egongeletan, Atlantikoaren ikuskizun bizia aprezia zitekeen.
Mendebaldean, berriz, zenbait pabiloi, aintzira bat eta harri koskorrak. Hogei bat hektareako ingeles parkea hortentsiaz, errododendroz eta yuccaz apaindua zen. Egoiliarrek esentzia balsamikoz osatua zen ibilbidea egiten zuten tratamendu terapeutiko gisa. Bigarren Inperioaren gainbeheraren ondotik eta Napoleonen eta bere seme bakarraren heriotzen ondotik, Eugéniek etxea saltzea erabaki zuen. 1880. urtean, Biarritz aldatzen ari zen: bere arrakastaren biktima zen. Hiriak handitu behar zuen: hotel gehiago behar ziren, etxe gehiago. Parkea zatika saldu zuen, eta etxea, eraldatu eta handitu.
Denbora batez kasino izan ondoren, 1892an «Hôtel du Palais» bilakatu zen: atxikiko duen izendapena. 1903an sute batek suntsitu zuen, eta Alfred Boulantek berreraiki zuen. Eugénie Etxearen itxura moderno hori zinez arrakastatsua izan zen. Niermans arkitektoak betoi armatuz eginiko estruktura burutsu bat baliatu zuen fatxada altuaren eta barneko apainketa oparo eta finaren gibelean. Jauregi berriak 1905ean ireki zituen ateak eta Europako monarkien hotelik gustukoena bilakatu zen; besteak beste, Edouard VII erregeak erregularki bisitatu baitzuen 1901etik 1910era. 50eko hamarkadatik aitzina, munduko izarrik handienak eta nazioarteko goi-mailako jendea aterpetu izan ditu. 2011an «Palace» izendapena jaso zuen eta gaur egun, luxuzko ostalaritzaren eta goi-mailako gastronomiaren nazioarteko erakusleihoa da.
