Villa Larralde - 1867 (FR)

Coco Chanel.

Villa Larralde - 1867 (GB)

Clinging to the hillside, bristling with rounded towers, this triangular villa has been defying the ocean since 1867. Designed to reduce the impact of the wind, its first owner, Sir Edmund Bellairs, demonstrated great ingenuity. The home was highly avant-garde and luxurious for its epoch, and a formidable “seaside design”, according to architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. In 1915, it attracted the attention of a young fashion designer who was impatient to put her talent to work in Biarritz: Coco Chanel. It was here that she opened her very first fashion house “Chanel Modes”, equipped a large workshop and decorated her private apartment in the best Art Deco style. It is also here that she played hostess to her Slav friends, like the famous composer Igor Stravinsky and founder of the Ballets Russes Serge de Diaghilev.

Wind gust - pencil stroke!

Edmund Hooke Wilson Bellairs, a British subject, settled in Biarritz after spending many years in New Zealand. The climate was mild, the Pyrenees plunged into the ocean, the Basques bathed naked in the spume-crested waves; it was altogether reminiscent of his experience in the southern hemisphere. In order to take full advantage, he purchased an exposed plot of land, on the “slope down to the beach”, from where the horizon seemed to be torn to shreds by the rocks.

Edmund, a banker and poet, was also modern and astute. He read up on the works of Viollet Le Duc and then drew up his own plans for his house. And so “Emilia” was created, an innovative, triangular-shaped villa whose apex, fortified by a tower, faced into the prevailing winds. Ten years later, the famous architect himself commented on the ingenious positioning of the villa, “gusts of wind have very little impact on this triangular building and its rounded edges.”

Nick-named “Fort Bellairs” by the locals, because of its high towers and the starkness of its smooth, grey façades in Bidache stone, “Emilia” was nevertheless the most modern holiday home in Biarritz at that time.

Renamed Larralde in 1875, the villa was available to rent in 1915. It was wartime, and interested tenants were few and far between… A young and rather “cheeky” milliner signed the lease and created her first “real” fashion house… with phenomenally dazzling success. Three years later, Mademoiselle was the owner. Meanwhile, in Biarritz – and elsewhere around the world – she had already made her impact. Shorter hemlines, open-necked jackets, looser waistlines… Gabrielle reinvented the woman.

Her name? Coco Chanel

SLIDE SHOW

Villa Larralde - 1867 (ES)

Coco Chanel.

DIAPOSITIVAS

Villa Larralde - 1867 (EUS)

Patarrari loturik eta bere dorre borobil altuekin, triangelu-formako etxe hau ozeanoaren parean eraiki zen 1867an. Bere forma dela medio, haizearekiko babestua da. Horrela nahi izan zuen Edmun Bellairs bere lehen jabe burutsuak. Etxea aitzindaria eta luxuzkoa zen bere garaian, «itsas-modelo» bat, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc arkitektoaren hitzetan. 1915ean Biarritzen lan egin nahi zuen moda diseinatzaile gazte baten interesa piztu zuen: Coco Chanel zen. Hemen ireki zuen bere lehen joskintza etxea, «Chanel Modes». Tailer handi bat sortu zuen eta bere bizilekua ere bertan ezarri zuen, «Art déco» estiloari segituz apaindua. Etxe honetan errezibitzen zituen bere lagun eslaviarrak, besteak beste, Igor Stravinsky konpositore famatua edo Sergei Diagilev, Errusiar Balleten sortzailea.

Haizearen zirimolatik arkatzaren zirriborrora

Edmund Hooke Wilson Bellairs, britainiarra jatorriz, Biarritzera etorri zen bizitzera, zenbait urte Zelanda Berrian igaro ondotik. Euskal Herria goxoa zen, Pirineoak ozeanoan murgiltzen ziren eta euskaldunak biluzik bainatzen ziren itsasoan. Lur honek hegoaldeko usaina zuen. Horretaz baliatzeko, lur eremu bat erosi zuen «hondartzarako bidean». Arrokek zerumuga zirtzikatzen zutela iduri zuen.

Edmund, bankulari-poeta, modernoa eta zuhurra zen. Bere etxea eraikitzeko momentuan, Viollet Le Duc arkitektoaren testuak irakurri eta planoak bere kabuz marraztu zituen. Horrela sortu zen «Emilia», ezohiko etxea, hiruki formakoa. Puntan dorre bat zuen, haize nagusienen zentzua segitzen zuena. Orientazio hori burutsua zen, horrela deskribatu zuen hamar urte berantago arkitekto famatuak: «haize boladek ez dute eragin handirik eraikinarengan, bere triangelu-forma eta angelu borobilduak direla medio».

Herritarrek «Bellairs gaztelua» deitzen zuten, dorre altuak zituelako eta Bidaxuneko harriz eraikitako bere fatxada leun eta grisak halako itxura ematen ziolako. Alta, «Emilia» garai hartako Biarritzeko etxe modernoetarik bat zen.

1875ean «Larralde» izena jarri zion eta 1915ean alokairuan ezarri zuen. Gerra garaia zen, eskaintza gutxi bazen… Kapelugile gazte eta «ahalkegabe» batek alokatu zuen eta bere lehen «egiazko» joskintza etxea sortu zuen. Sekulako arrakasta izan zuen, harrotzeko moduko kausitzea: hiru urte berantago, eraikinaren jabe zen. Anartean, mundua aldatu zuen Biarritzen eta baita haratago ere. Gona laburrak, bularralde zabaleko jakak, gerri askatuak… Gabriellek emaztearen izatea birdefinitu zuen.

Bere deitura? Coco Chanel.
